Bahrain: Torturers acquitted, 8 citizens handed 108 years in prison

A Bahraini court has sentenced 7 citizens from Sitra each to 15 years and one other citizen to 3 years, meaning a total of 108 years of imprisonment to all.

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - A Bahraini court has sentenced 7 citizens from Sitra each to 15 years and one other citizen to 3 years, meaning a total of 108 years of imprisonment to all.The lengthy sentences were issued just one day after the court acquitted two officers accused of torturing medics in detention despite evidence. Another officer was acquitted from torturing a journalist about a month ago. However, the only evidence provided in such politically-motivated cases are the detainees’ coerced confessions obtained under torture, as the security apparatuses practices systematic torture.According to the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry, trials in Bahrain are used to attack the opposition. These very same trials were described by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights as “political persecution”./129
