Al-Azhar Takes Anti-Shia Stance, Yet Again

Egypt’s Al-Azhar University plans to hold a press conference to elaborate on means for confronting what it called “dangers of the spread of Shia thought”.

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - A delegation of scholars from the university will say what means are there for standing against the spread of Shia thought, including launching satellite TV networks and delivering sermons in mosques, Al-Misriyun daily reported. Osama Suleyman, an Al-Azhar scholar, has been quoted as saying that Al-Azhar has been prepared to intensify its efforts to confront Shia ideas. He asserted that Shi’ites misuse the Iran-Egypt tourism agreement to spread their agenda. Mahmoud Hamada, member of the university’s Fiqh (jurisprudence) committee has said the university will set up specialized satellite networks to clarify the “dangers of spread of Shia ideas in Egypt”. Such statements and claims are not new, as Al-Azhar has taken anti-Shia stances previously. In October last year, it held a joint anti-Shia forum with Egypt’s Salafists. Instead of making accusations against Shia Muslims, the center, which is the largest seat of learning in Sunni Islam, is expected to focus its activities on warning Muslims against the ploys of hegemonic powers.End item/ 149
