Bahrain: Lawsuit against Gov spokeswoman for misuse of post to defame the opposition

Al-Wefaq National Islamic Society has filed a lawsuit at the Public Prosecution against the government spokeswoman Sameera Rajab for her misuse of her official post to defame the society and its political action.

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Al-Wefaq National Islamic Society has filed a lawsuit at the Public Prosecution against the government spokeswoman Sameera Rajab for her misuse of her official post to defame the society and its political action.

Al-Wefaq said the statements made by Rajab to Asharq Al-Awsat international newspaper went beyond permissible criticism, evaluation and personal opinion to the degree of false accusations against it, and are considered a crime of defamation in the Penal Code-article 75. Sameera Rajab has misused her official post as the government spokeswoman and Minister of Information Affairs to make false statements to the press accusing Al-Wefaq of calling for and using violence, al-Wefaq said.

Al-Wefaq mentioned in its complain that Sameera Rajab made a statement to Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper dated 14th March 2013 that "Al-Wefaq is not serious to go for the dialogue," and that "Al-Wefaq still depends on violence in streets to implement its illegitimate agendas". This same statement was published by Bahrain News Agency (BNA) on 14th March 2013.

On 17th March 2013 the newspaper published that Bahrain spokeswoman and Minister of Information Affairs stated that the violence called by Al-Wefaq will not be allowed to fail of the dialogue.

Rajab has repeatedly made such statements thinking that she was above the law, al-Wefaq added.

The statements made by Rajab accusing al-Wefaq of violence or supporting and depending on it at least are contrary to the known stance of the Bahraini National Democratic Opposition Parties including Al-Wefaq National Islamic Society. The opposition parties have expressed their stance towards violence in the Nonviolence Principles Declaration which was issued on 7th November 2012 and this is repeatedly and clearly expressed in the opposition's statements.
