Bahrainis rally against authorities refusing to give protester’s body

Bahrainis have staged anti-regime demonstrations in several villages near the capital to express their anger over the authorities’ refusal to hand over the body of a recently killed protester.

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Head Scores of Bahrainis took to the streets on Friday to urge the authorities to hand over the body of Mahmoud Isa al-Jaziri to his family for burial.

The 20-year-old protester was hit in the head by a tear gas canister on February 14 after security forces attacked anti-regime demonstrators in Nabi Saleh, south of Manama, as they were marking the second anniversary of the uprising.

According to Bahrain's main opposition bloc al-Wefaq, Jaziri died in the hospital on February 22 after a week in coma.

Bahraini authorities have so far made no comments on Jaziri's death. Bahrainis have held several rallies to demand Jaziri's body over the past week.

Meanwhile, a Bahraini court has sentenced prominent human rights activist Zainab al-Khawaja to three months in prison for "insulting and humiliating a public employee."

She was reportedly arrested by the Saudi-backed forces in a demonstration held in capital Manama on February 27.

She is the daughter of Abdulhadi al-Khawaja, who is among eight activists and opposition figures sentenced to life imprisonment for leading the popular uprising against the ruling Al Khalifa which started in 2011.
