South Africa’s ruling party endorses anti-Israel boycott

In support of the oppressed Palestinians in the occupied lands, South Africa’s ruling party, the African National Congress (ANC), has officially endorsed a boycott campaign against Israel.

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - ANC issued a statement on December 20, saying that the majority of its members have voted for boycotting products from illegal Israeli settlements built on occupied lands in a bid to end the complicity of South African people in the violation of Palestinian rights.

The statement also said that “The ANC is unequivocal in its support for the Palestinian people in their struggle for self-determination, and unapologetic in its view that the Palestinians are the victims and the oppressed in the conflict with Israel.”

This comes after the South Africans called on the country’s officials to join the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) campaign which started on July 9, 2005 by 171 Palestinian non-governmental organizations to protest against Israel's illegal settlement in the Palestinian territories.

South Africans slammed the treatment of the Palestinians by Israelis, equaling the move with their former Apartheid regime's abuse of the blacks.

Israeli settlements are considered illegal by the United Nation and many countries, since those Palestinian territories were captured by Israel in the 1967 war, and are therefore subject to the Geneva Conventions, which forbids construction on occupied lands.

A number of industries have sprung up in illegal Israeli settlements, with a range of products, including cosmetics, beverages and plastics.
