(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Bahrain AlWefaq National Islamic Society demanded the immediate release of human right activist and president of Bahrain Center for Human Rights, Nabeel Rajab, stressing that his detention coinciding with the International Human Rights Day, refutes the regime's claims of protecting rights.
AlWefaq stressed that human rights in Bahrain are crushed by the regime, and the repeated claims of protecting rights, made by officials, are merely for PR purposes, and are scandalized by the ongoing daily violations on ground. As citizens in Bahrain suffer from house-raids, arrests, torture, assaults, killings and other kind of unprecedented violations that have shocked the world.
The society stressed that Rajab's arrest, along with the other detained citizens with fabricated accusations, is related to reasons of freedom of expression. By this, the authority is violating the most basic human rights, it stated.
It also highlighted article 21 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, that states, " The right of peaceful assembly shall be recognized. No restrictions may be placed on the exercise of this right other than those imposed in conformity with the law and which are necessary in a democratic society in the interests of national security or public safety, public order (ordre public), the protection of public health or morals or the protection of the rights and freedoms of others."
AlWefaq said, "Regimes that do not ensure one's right to life, liberty and security of person and property, are with no question, undemocratic".
It emphasized that protest is an internationally guaranteed right, and is the only resort to make one's voice heard and prove objection and practice right to opinion and expression. However, in Bahrain, this basic humanitarian right is repressed and banned by the regime that cracks down on protests demanding democratic transition, across the country on a daily basis.
