Thousands attend Ashura procession in Myanmar + Pics

There are approximately 20,000 Shia Muslims in Myanmar, who marked the day of Ashura on 25th November 2012.

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - The day of Ashura is a national holiday held on the 10th day of Muharram in the Islamic calendar, with men beating themselves as they mourn the martyrdom of Hussain ibn Ali (AS), the grandson of the Islamic Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).There are approximately 20,000 Shia Muslims in Myanmar, who marked the day of Ashura on 25th November 2012.The ceremonies commemorating the martyrdom of the third Shia Imam and his 72 companions reach their climax on the Day of Ashura — the tenth day of the Islamic lunar month of Muharram.Ashura is the anniversary of the day in 680 CE, when thousands of forces loyal to the despotic Umayyad caliph Yazid ibn Muawiyah martyred Imam Hussain (PBUH) and his companions in Karbala, Iraq.Hundreds of thousands of people visit Karbala for the Ashura religious rituals every year./129
