Tens of Thousands of Shia Muslims in Kargil district of Jammu and Kashmir commemorated Ashura and renewed their allegiance to Prophet's grandson Imam Hussain (pbuh).

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Tens of thousands of people from every corner of Kargil district of Jammu and Kashmir, dressed in black, took to the streets of Kargil town on Sunday, the tenth day of the lunar month of Muharram (25.11.2012), to mourn the tragedy on a day known as Ashura. With their fists raised up high, "At your service o Hussein" they screamed, "At your service of Messenger of Allah", "At your service O Khamenei", reassuring that the calamity that fell on the prophet's household over one thousand years ago because of the small number of supporters, will not take place again because there are brave people ready to sacrifice themselves and their loved ones for the sake of Islam, righteousness, and the awaited Imam and his deputy.

"Death to America… Death to Israel" they further repeated constantly, a phrase Imam Hussein followers chant every year on Ashura, as they consider that these are the tyrant and oppressor of our day, just like Yazid was the tyrant in the days of Imam Hussein (as). People also chanted slogans in support of Gaza, saying "At your service o Gaza".

The procession ultimately terminated at public park Kargil were Haji Asghar Ali Karbalayi delivered an enthusiastic speech in which he hailed the resistance of the Palestinian Islamic Jehad and Hamas in the 8 day war against the Zionist regime. people also waved the Flags of Palestine during the procession.

The Day of Ashura (Arabic: عاشوراء‎ ʻĀshūrā’; Urdu: عاشورہ‎; Persian: عاشورا; Turkish: Aşure Günü) is on the 10th day of Muharram in the Islamic calendar and marks the climax of the Mourning of Muharram.

It is commemorated by Shi'a Muslims as a day of mourning for the martyrdom of Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of Muhammad  and son of Imam Ali (PBUT) and the third Shia Imam at the Battle of Karbala on 10 Muharram in the year 61 AH (in AHc: October 9, and in AHt: October 10, 680 CE).

In some Shi'a regions of Muslim countries such as Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Pakistan, Lebanon, and Bahrain, the Commemoration of Husayn ibn Ali has become a national holiday and most ethnic and religious communities participate in it. Even in predominantly Hindu majority but secular country like India, Ashura (10th day in the month of Muharram) is a public holiday..
