(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Tens of thousands Muslims in Zaria, Nigeria joined the rest of the Muslim world to Commemorate Ashura tragedy. The Leader of the Shia Islamic Movement Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky also joined the processions barefooted on Sunday the 10th Muharram 1434 (25/11/12).

This year's Ashura day mourning procession will remain indelible in the minds of members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, as the Leader, Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky joined multitudes of other mourners barefoot, in a symbolic trek to Karbala, to mark the pinnacle day of Ashura mourning with the rest of the world.

In an interview, Sheikh Zakzaky stressed that, Imam Hussain (AS) stood by the truth and justice, and because people always want truth and justice, they automatically moved towards him. "This is why revolution remained in the hearts of people to date. Not necessarily Muslims, but even non-Muslims. They admire him, he is indeed a hero," added Sheikh Zakzaky.

He said, truth and justice will always overcome falsehood and lies, and that Nigeria, by the grace of God, will overcome its challenges.

"In this country, we have never lost hope. Like it or hate it, it is the truth. We know Nigeria is a country created by Islam. It is a country where majority of its inhabitants are Muslims. The history of this country is rooted in Islam, and one day it will come back to Islam, by the grace of God".

Similar processions were carried out across the country, and indeed in the rest of the world, Muslim and non-Muslim countries alike.

The Day of Ashura (Arabic: عاشوراء‎ ʻĀshūrā’; Urdu: عاشورہ‎; Persian: عاشورا; Turkish: Aşure Günü) is on the 10th day of Muharram in the Islamic calendar and marks the climax of the Mourning of Muharram.

It is commemorated by Shi'a Muslims as a day of mourning for the martyrdom of Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of Muhammad  and son of Imam Ali (PBUT) and the third Shia Imam at the Battle of Karbala on 10 Muharram in the year 61 AH (in AHc: October 9, and in AHt: October 10, 680 CE).

In some Shi'a regions of Muslim countries such as Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Pakistan, Lebanon, and Bahrain, the Commemoration of Husayn ibn Ali has become a national holiday and most ethnic and religious communities participate in it. Even in predominantly Hindu majority but secular country like India, Ashura (10th day in the month of Muharram) is a public holiday.
