(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - On Sunday 10th Muharram 1434 lunar month (25.11.2012), multitude of people in the commercial nerve centre of Northern Nigeria, Kano, and its environs joined millions of Muslims World over in commemorating the Ashura tragedy.
The participants, of which majority are teeming youths, marched through the major streets in the municipality. It started from Waje Mosque, Fagge, went through abbatoir, Koki, ‘yan mota, gabari, makwarari and concluded at the ancient Mosque at the Emir’s palace. This was an answer to the call of the revered leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, his Eminence Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky (H). Similar processions have been conducted in all the major cities in Nigeria.
A spectacular drama to illustrate the brutal massacre of Imam Hussain (AS), his sons and other members of the progeny of the Prophet and the travails undergone by women and children afterwards was conducted before the closing remarks. Malam Muhammad Turi, in his closing remarks, asserted the fact that it was the Prophet (S) who first mourned the tragic Karbala event. He drew the attention of the tumultuous and highly emotional audience on the fact that it is now 1373 years, yet the sad event is being commemorated as if it happened in our times.
He pointed to the glaring lesson of Ashura that the blood triumphed over the sword. Muslims and non Muslims alike got a lot of inspiration from this golden sacrifice which led to a revolution in the history of mankind. Imam Hussain clearly stated his message that he rose against ungodliness, tyranny, corruption and oppression in order to reform the Ummah of his grandfather.
Malam Turi noted that we can see clearly in our contemporary time that those who hold to the message of Hussain (AS) have attained prosperity, dignity and honour, citing examples of the Islamic Republic in Iran, Hizbullah and Hamas. It is a well known fact to all that Hamas came out victorious after the recent 8 day atrocity perpetrated by the illegal Zionist entity, Israel on Gazza.

Ashura, the 10th of Muharram
The Day of Ashura (Arabic: عاشوراء ʻĀshūrā’; Urdu: عاشورہ; Persian: عاشورا; Turkish: Aşure Günü) is on the 10th day of Muharram in the Islamic calendar and marks the climax of the Mourning of Muharram.
It is commemorated by Shi'a Muslims as a day of mourning for the martyrdom of Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of Muhammad and son of Imam Ali (PBUT) and the third Shia Imam at the Battle of Karbala on 10 Muharram in the year 61 AH (in AHc: October 9, and in AHt: October 10, 680 CE).
In some Shi'a regions of Muslim countries such as Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Pakistan, Lebanon, and Bahrain, the Commemoration of Husayn ibn Ali has become a national holiday and most ethnic and religious communities participate in it. Even in predominantly Hindu majority but secular country like India, Ashura (10th day in the month of Muharram) is a public holiday.
