(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Al-Wefaq National Islamic Society said that the Bahraini regime has deployed military combat units of the National Guard- that foreigners make the vast majority of-in Sitra island, a residential area, within its campaign of escalation in handling nonviolent pro-democracy protests.
Al-Wefaq further clarified that the regime has started, some days ago, a wide campaign of escalation that included wrongdoings that are strange to the culture of the peaceful people of Bahrain. The escalation came along with the ban on protests and freedom of expression and opinion, in what seems more like an unannounced state of emergency imposed by the regime against the people. And now, a suffocating clampdown on some areas that has continued for days along with deployment of a large number of military and security blockades followed by the revocation of nationalities from dissident citizens. The regime has gone as far as provoking citizens through ongoing verbal harassments against prominent religious figures.
Al-Wefaq said that the people of Bahrain are rightfully demanding democracy and power-sharing as the constitution and National Charter both state that "The people are the source of all powers". The people are demanding an end to tyranny and authoritativeness decision-making, and that has created a situation of backwardness and the absence of basic fundamentals of state and popular will, besides rampant corruption.
Al-Wefaq stressed that the base cause in Bahrain is a political one in which the vast majority of the people of Bahrain have started a revolution demanding democracy only to be faced with killings, repression, dismissals, arrests, torture and false accusation. Students have been forced out of schools and universities and areas have been sieged.
Al-Wefaq expressed its surprise of the deployment of the national guard in Sitra and other areas, pointing out that these forces which are made up of military units with light and heavy weapons and move in military and armoured vehicles are not supposed to repress and target the citizens along with the security services' revenge and suppression of freedoms.
Al-Wefaq stated that this military deployment comes as a part of a systematic campaign to confront citizens and as many areas are being under siege, while more violations are being committed against people such as in Mihazza in Sitra Island. Concerns grow that more violations may be committed against people behind the siege in that area.
Al-Wefaq questioned the call of the military force's front line to take part in the suppressive security crackdown undertaken by the security forces, and in which more than 100 citizens have been killed while thousands have been assaulted. The security forces raid homes terrifying peaceful households and widely perpetrate crimes and violence.
Al-Wefaq demanded a stop to militarizing the country and to stop exploiting the security forces to escalate violence and commit violations against citizens, "This indicates the security force's aberrant mentality and its shift from protecting the citizens to attacking them and their properties.", Al-Wefaq said.
Al-Wefaq also stated that the security mentality is aggressive and disrespectful to a wide section of the people of Bahrain which explains its inhuman and repressive behavior when dealing with citizens. Such mentality must be replaced with to a respectful mentality that is based on protecting, defending and respecting all citizens.
Al-Wefaq stated that the international community is witnessing the unfolding events in Bahrain, the official security alert and the violence that is strange to the Bahraini community, all coincide with the regime's intention to escalate, and target the national popular figures, relentlessly hoping to end the ongoing popular demands for a real democratic transition.
