Bahraini demonstrators demand release of activist Nabeel Rajab

Bahraini anti-regime protesters have held a demonstration in the northwestern village of Bani Jamra to demand the release of detained human rights activist Nabeel Rajab.

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - The demonstrators gathered in front the house of the prominent activist in Bani Jamra on Sunday.

The president of the Bahrain Center for Human Rights (BCHR), Rajab was arrested upon return from Lebanon at the Bahrain International Airport in the capital, Manama, on May 5.

Sayed Yousif Almuhafda, a member of the BCHR, said Saturday that Bahraini police “had an arrest warrant from the public prosecutions office” to detain Rajab.

The charges leveled against the Bahraini activist include “participating in illegal assembly and calling others to join,” according to the BCHR.

Meanwhile, Bahrain’s Minor Criminal Court on Sunday postponed the trial of Rajab until May 22.

The arrest of Nabeel Rajab comes at a time when Saudi-backed regime forces continue their fierce crackdown on peaceful protests in the country.

On May 5, Bahraini police used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse anti-regime demonstrators in the villages of Dair and Samaheej, located on the northern coast of the Muharraq Island.

Bahraini demonstrators hold King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa responsible for the death of protesters during the popular uprising that began in February 2011.
