Mubarak-era PM is allowed back in Egypt’s presidential race

Egypt’s Higher Presidential Election Commission has reversed its decision to bar Mubarak-era Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq from running in the country’s upcoming presidential election.

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - The commission allowed him to reenter the race on Wednesday, despite having disqualified him a day earlier, Egypt’s state Middle East News Agency (MENA) reported.

The election is scheduled to be held on May 23 and 24, while a run-off will be held from June 16 to 17, if necessary.

Shafiq's bid was first rejected to comply with a bill adopted by the Egyptian parliament earlier this month, which denies political rights to anyone, who served in ousted dictator Hosni Mubarak’s regime.

He was named prime minister in the final days of the former regime in February 2011 as Mubarak was battling Egypt's revolution. The popular protests deposed the former dictator later that month after nearly 30 years of rule.

Mubarak-era intelligence chief Omar Suleiman has also been disqualified. He is notorious for his role in the brutal crackdown on the Egyptian public during Mubarak’s rule.

The electoral commission is expected to publish a definitive list of the candidates on Thursday.
