Sampang Shia Cleric Tajul Muluk Accused of Blasphemy

Sampang Shiite cleric Tajul Muluk, who faced the first hearing of his trial on Tuesday at the Sampang District Court, has been accused of propagating religious blasphemy and insulting Islam, and faces more than five years’ imprisonment if found guilty.

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Prosecutor Sucipto, in his indictment, stated that among the blatant forms of religious blasphemies that Tajul had propagated was telling his disciples that the current Al Quran was not the original version.

“The original one is still in the hands of the imam Mahdi,” Sucipto said as quoted by tempo.co.

Besides questioning the originality of the Quran, the sacred text of Islam, Sucipto added without further elaboration that Tajul had also ordered his disciples to lie.

Presiding Judge Purnomo Amin Cahyo adjourned the trial to the same time next week to allow for Tajul to prepare his defense statement.

Tajul, who was without a lawyer, was then brought back to the detention center under heavy guard.

Sampang Police had deployed approximately 150 personnel to guard the trial to protect against any threats.

Tajul was arrested because the police considered that his teachings incited communal violence by Sunni Muslims. However, many rights activists have alleged that such conflict was being fomented by religious elites for their own ends.

The Shia use the same Quran as Sunni Muslims. The Shia believe that the Quran was gathered and compiled by Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.w) during his lifetime.

The completeness of Quran is so indisputable among Shia that the greatest scholar of Shia in Hadith, Abu Jafar Muhammad Ibn Ali Ibn al-Husain Ibn Babwayh, known as "Shaykh Saduq" (309/919-381/991), wrote:

"Our belief is that the Quran which Allah revealed to His Prophet Muhammad is (the same as) the one between the two covers (daffatayn). And it is the one which is in the hands of the people, and is not greater in extent than that. The number of surahs as generally accepted is one hundred and fourteen ...And he who asserts that we say that it is greater in extent than that, is a liar."
