(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - To address some of the pressing issues in the country, a coalition of Muslims organizations in Nigeria is organizing a conference to be held next week in Abuja.

The conference, entitled "Nigerian Muslims and Democracy" is scheduled to hold on 14 and 15 April, 2012 at the Conference Hall of the National Mosque, Abuja (pictured) with Sultan of Sokoto Alhaji Muhammad Sa'ad Abubakar as special guest of honour.

Nigeria's speaker of the House of Representatives Aminu Waziri Tambuwal will be the other guest of honour while the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Senator Bala Muhammad and Professor Daud Noibi will serve as chief host and chairman of the occasion respectively.

Participants at the conference include all Muslim state governors, traditional rulers, federal and state lawmakers, ministers, and politicians, as well as Islamic scholars, lawyers, journalists and students.

The stated theme of the conference is "the political future of Muslims in a democratic Nigeria".

A statement signed by Alhaji Isa Waziri Gwantu on behalf of the publicity sub-committee, said the conference which is the first of its kind by the Muslim organizations since the establishment of democracy in the country, "is aimed at discussing issues that border on the rights and roles of Muslims, challenges and the way forward in the country's democratic processes."

The confab, the statement said, will also "discuss and suggest solutions to the problems that have been bedeviling and threatening the corporate existence of Nigeria as a sovereign, united and peaceful entity."

"The two-day conference according to the chairman organizing committee of the conference, Professor Ibrahim Na'iya Sada, is expected to attract participants from all states of the federation to chart the way forward for the Muslims and to evolve a process of advising and assisting government on the role to play in ensuring good and result-oriented governance," the statement said.
