(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - A Bahraini court has handed down jail terms to 10 demonstrators for taking part in a protest rally marking the first anniversary of the country’s uprising.
The 10 were arrested in February for marching toward the site of capital's Pearl Square, the focal point of the Bahrain uprising which was razed down last year as part of the crackdown on protests, AFP quoted a judicial source as saying on Monday without providing further detail.
Thousands of Bahrainis took to the streets across the country on February 14 to mark the first anniversary of the popular uprising in the country. The peaceful rallies, however, were broken up by regime forces and scores of people were arrested for attending the march.
Bahrainis have been staging demonstrations since mid-February 2011, demanding political reform and a constitutional monarchy, a demand that later changed to an outright call for the ouster of the ruling Al Khalifa family following its brutal crackdown on popular protests.
