(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Clashes between security forces and angry soccer fans in the city of Port Said in northeastern Egypt have left one person dead and 18 others wounded.
The clashes erupted late on Friday and continued into the early hours of Saturday after the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) banned al-Masry club for two seasons following Egypt’s deadliest soccer disaster, Reuters reported.
On February 1, at least 74 people were killed and 1,000 injured after football fans invaded the field of Port Said Stadium where al-Masry defeated al-Ahly, the most popular team in the North African country, three to one.
The incident was one of the deadliest disasters in the world's soccer history.
On March 15, Egypt’s prosecutor general charged 75 people, including nine police officers, over the deadly incident.
Many fans blame the government for its failure to curb the violence and believe the bloodshed was started by hired thugs.
