Bahrainis block roads to protest activist's detention

Anti-regime protesters have begun setting up road blocks across Bahrain to show solidarity with a detained prominent human rights activist.

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Activists announced on Saturday that they are using whatever they can to block major highways and streets in a bid to cause traffic jams. The protesters added that several major roads have already been blocked.

The campaign, dubbed "Mourning Sky Two," has been organized by the February 14 Youth Coalition.

The protesters say the action is meant to show solidarity with jailed activist Abdul Hadi al-Khawaja. Currently serving a life sentence, Khawaja has refused to eat for two weeks now.

On Friday, tens of thousands of Bahrainis rallied near the capital, Manama, to demand an end to the decades-long rule of the Al Khalifa dynasty.

Bahrain has been witnessing a wave of anti-regime protests since February 2011. Dozens have been killed and hundreds wounded in the regime crackdown on peaceful demonstrators.

Despite the ongoing crackdown, the anti-regime protests continue in the Persian Gulf kingdom.
