(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Thousands of Bahrainis have gathered outside the United Nations headquarters in the capital, Manama, to ask for UN intervention to end deadly government crackdown on anti-monarchy protests.
The protest gathering came as a UN delegation is visiting the country to follow up on Manama's response to a report by an independent commission on rights violations during the crackdown.
Carrying pictures of victims of the government crackdown, protesters condemned the violation of human rights by the ruling Al Khalifa family and called on the UN to take action to stop the regime's killing of anti-government protesters.
They also urged authorities to release political prisoners including medics, students, and clerics.
Opposition leaders have reportedly delivered a letter to the four-member UN team seeking UN monitoring of government actions in the kingdom, saying nothing has changed since the government-authorized international investigation publicized last month found numerous instances of rights abuse.
The UN team, headed by Bacre Ndiaye, the Director of the Human Rights Council and Special Procedures Division at UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), is expected to submit a report to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay.
