(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - About 3,000 protesters ended up in the city's financial hub of Martin Place on Saturday.
"We are the 99 percent,” a member of the Maritime Union of Australia, Paul McAleer said, referring to the protesters' assertion that the nation's wealth is eaten up by one percent of the population.
"We are not alone. It is not only Sydney. The world is coming together. The inspirational movement of working people in the history,” he added.
Police arrested at least six protesters. "Something is wrong…At one point you have to say that enough is enough,” said another protester said. The demonstrators also held, what they called, a mock funeral for democracy.
"We are gathered here to mourn the passing of democracy. It has grieved me as I know it has grieved you all that, over last number of years, we have watched that our daily beloved democracy has been abused by one percent and the politicians that are able to buy off,” said one person attending the mock funeral.
The Occupy push is a spinoff of the 'Occupy Wall Street' (OWS) movement, which was created in New York City on September 17 to protest against social and economic inequalities caused by 'corporate greed' and high-level corruption.
The OWS has spread to major US cities and inspired protests across Europe.
