Bahraini protester gets death sentence

A Bahraini military court has sentenced a protester to death for alleged killing of a policeman during anti-regime demonstrations in the authoritarian Persian Gulf country.

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Lawyer Mohsen al-Alawi says a special security court issued the verdict against the protester on Thursday.

The national security appeals court, set up during a period of martial law that ended on May 31, also sentenced a number of medical professionals to lengthy jail terms for treating injured protesters during anti-regime protests in the country.

Thirteen doctors and nurses have been given prison sentences of 15 years in prison.

The verdicts came a day after the military court upheld the life sentences handed down for eight opposition leaders convicted of playing vital roles in the anti-government protests in the country.

The court on Wednesday confirmed the verdicts issued against 15 opposition activists in June. Eight of the activists were sentenced to life imprisonment and seven were handed down jail terms ranging from two to 15 years.

Six of those that received 15-year jail terms did not appeal their sentences.

The 15 were part of a 21-member opposition activists, some of whom were tried for plotting to overthrow the Bahraini government, organizing unlicensed protests as well as colluding with a foreign country and convicted in absentia.

Bahrainis have been holding anti-government rallies since mid-February, demanding an end to the Al Khalifa dynasty, which has ruled the country for over 40 years.

Scores of people have been killed and hundreds more arrested in a brutal crackdown on peaceful protesters in Bahrain, home to a huge American military installation for the US Navy's Fifth Fleet in the Persian Gulf.
