Kenya: Muslim Clerics Furious Over Open Gay Website

Muslim leaders are up in arms over calls by members of the lesbians, gay, bisexuals, transgender and inter-sex (LGBTI) community to have their human rights respected.

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Muslim leaders are up in arms over calls by members of the lesbians, gay, bisexuals, transgender and inter-sex (LGBTI) community to have their human rights respected. The Council of Imams and Preachers of Kenya said the gay community should be condemned and not respected because they go against the teachings of God. "We will not support or allow any activities of the gay community in the country because no religion is for it," said CIPK organizing secretary Sheikh Mohamed Khalifa.Sheikh Khalifa said the move to open a website by the LGBTI is an insult to the morals of the society and religion at large. Kate Kamunde of AfraKenya appealed to the public to abide by the constitution and coexist with the gay and lesbian communities adding that their rights should be respected.Gays and Lesbian Coalition of Kenya general manager Eric Gitau said the gay community is part of Kenya and that they should be involved in the development of the country. But Sheik Khalifa said the bold move by the gay community to launch a website where they would be discussing their issues is because some powerful ministers and senior government officials are behind the movement. "We want them to come out and declare their stand openly, not using other groups to pass messages. Even if it is the CJ, any minister or member of the executive, we want them to come out clean," said Sheikh Khalifa./129
