Interview with Nabeel Rajab, director of Bahrain Center for Human Rights

Bahraini king can't fight democracy

Scores of people have been killed in the Manama regime's crackdown on peaceful anti-government demonstrations in Bahrain since mid-February.

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - We have interviewed Nabeel Rajab, the director of Bahrain Center for Human Rights for more on the issue.

What follows is the transcription of the interview.

Q: Tell us about the funeral procession, why should the security forces kill a child?

Rajab: First of all I am still in the funeral procession it has been delayed for the past two hours for reasons no one is aware of. The government has not yet given the body to the family of the victim. As you know the victim was killed last night by the riot police, the official forces, he was followed by a car with a few people in it, and people saw that he was shot.

The ministry of interior have released a statement today that the bruises that he have on his neck does not appear to be from tear gas, but they have not denied that he was killed by the riot police. As you know Bahrain is experiencing sort of protests since last few weeks and it is increasing and the government's reaction towards it has been very bloody and very violent. A lot of people have been attacked in the past two days.

Unfortunately you know that we cannot take people to the hospitals we are treating them at home because of the worry that they can be arrested in the hospital. That is the case with the man who died yesterday. He was attacked by the police and it took some time for the people to take him to the hospital. Last night there were a lot of wounded people also but we could not take them all to the hospitals.

Q:The king in his latest statement called for unity, this doesn't go with the suppression of protesters and the killing of children, does it?

Rajab: Yes that was a statement released by the king yesterday but the picture on the ground is totally different from the speech that he gave this is not the first time the king talks about unity, but we see the troops on the ground killing people, looting houses, demolishing mosques, and destroying worship places, torturing people. That remains as a statement on TV only, and has nothing to do with reality.

Q: The death of this child has caused a lot of tensions, how long will Saudi-backed forces be able to continue this way?

Rajab:I know the security forces will not success. I don't know how long, it does not matter how long they will be there, I know they will not succeed because you cannot suppress people who are fighting for democracy. You cannot kill people forever because they call for a human life.

I think the day is very soon when those people will be defeated and go back home.
