Ramadhan Relief eases food shortages in Kenya

The Holy Prophet said, "O people! Iftaar to a fasting person during this month will be like one who has freed a slave and his past sins will be forgiven."

Over 2,500 families in Kenya have received food parcels through the Ramadhan Relief Fund to help them with the worst drought for 60 years. The Kenya Red Cross estimates more than 2 million people in Kenya are in need of emergency food supplies or they will become part of the ever-increasing number of casualties caused by this latest famine.

In Kenya, The Ramadhan Relief Program supports 17 Masjids in remote rural areas, 4 secondary schools, 2 Madaris, and over 2,500 families. Our agency was able to distribute Iftaar and Sehri to all the schools, centres and Madaris for 30 days.

Mohamed, a resident of Samburu Village located in the outskirts of Mombasa, said, “As the dry season was approaching and the situation was getting difficult due to the drought,  I did not know how I would provide my family with food to break their fast in Ramadhan.”

Abbas Nasser, The Head of Bilal Muslim Mission, our agency on the ground told us, “As people around the world commenced the holy month of Ramadhan, Muslims in the rural parts of Kenya, began this month with grave difficulties as the situation in parts of Kenya worsened.”

The Ramadhan Relief Program in Kenya is providing food parcels, Iftaars at schools, Madaris and Masjids. At the end of the month Ramadhan Relief hopes to provide people with Eid Gifts so they can celebrate Eid Al Fitr and enjoy it with their families.

The cost of sponsoring one Iftaar for a whole centre is £45, while the cost of providing a family with a food parcel for a month is £60. Alternatively you could also provide children with Eid Gifts for £5.

Abbas Nasser, added, “The Mission would like to thank the Africa Federation and The World Federation for its support, but I would encourage our Shia communities not to abandon their Shia communities in East Africa this Ramadhan.”
