Iran to deliver seven relief aid consignments to Somalia

Secretary General of Islamic Republic of Iran’s Red Crescent Society, Zaher Rostami, has reported on delivery of seven humanitarian relief aid consignments to famine-stricken Somali nation in the coming weeks

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - He said if permission is granted for usage of airlines, Iran Red Crescent Society’s relief aid consignments for the Somali nation will rise to ten in numbers.

According to Rostami, the 4th relief aid consignment, weighing 200 tons, will soon be dispatched for Somalia.

Up to now, three humanitarian relief aid consignments, with a weight of 120 tons, have been delivered to famine-hit Somali nation.

The UN refugee agency (UNHCR) said on Tuesday that the average number of deaths stretched back to June, which meant at least 500 children had died in the camp in less than two months.

According to Reuters, Adrian Edwards, a spokesman with the office of the UNHCR, said that malnutrition was the main cause of the deaths, adding that a measles outbreak had increased the toll.
