(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Eyeing a greater share of the halal industry pie, the Indonesian government is working to become the center of the world’s expanding industry, VIVAnews website reported.
"We must respond constructively to the request on halal products so as to boost the economy," Hatta Rajasa, the Coordinating Minister for the Economy, said on Friday, August 12.
“Indonesia has to be the center of world's halal-labeled products.”
The concept of halal, -- meaning permissible in Arabic -- has traditionally been applied to food.
Muslims should only eat meat from livestock slaughtered by a sharp knife from their necks, and the name of Allah, the Arabic word for God, must be mentioned.
Now other goods and services can also be certified as halal, including cosmetics, clothing, pharmaceuticals and financial services.
Serving approximately 1.4 billion of Muslims and non-Muslims worldwide, the growing industry was attracting different countries around the world, on the top of which comes Malaysia.
To achieve a part of the industry success, the country has to pay attention to global standards of halal labeling in that people will not hesitate to purchase halal-labeled products.
"The standards of excellence for halal products must be made regular," Rajasa said.
Islamic finance is also one of the fastest growing sectors in the global financial industry.
Currently, there are nearly 300 Islamic banks and financial institutions worldwide, whose assets are predicted to grow to $1 trillion by 2013.
