Tunisians rally to demand judicial reform

Hundreds of Tunisians have taken to streets in the capital city of Tunis, demanding judicial reforms and the trial of members of the toppled regime.

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - The demonstrations erupted after former Justice and Human Rights Minister Bechir Tekkari was released after being in custody since July 11.

Meanwhile, the trial of 23 relatives and associates of ousted President Zine al-Abdine Ben Ali has kicked off. They face allegations of trying to flee the country with large quantities of foreign money and jewelry.

The accused were arrested at the Tunis airport when they were boarding a private plane on January 14, the day Ben Ali escaped to Saudi Arabia. They include the sisters and nephews of Ben Ali's wife Leila Trabelsi

General Ali al-Seriati, the feared security chief of the toppled regime, also appeared before the court on Wednesday. He is charged with forging passports for Ben Ali's relatives to help them escape Tunisia.

A senior police officer said on Monday that Seriati had ordered police to let Ben Ali's relatives leave the country but he had decided to detain them.

Seriati has also been accused of orchestrating violence following the country's historic revolution in mid-January. He shouted “I ask the Tunisian people to forgive me. I am Tunisian and I love Tunisia," at the end of his trial.

The proceedings resumed on Wednesday after being delayed twice. The accused will face up to five years in jail and heavy fines if convicted.

Judge Faouzi Jbeli said that a verdict will be publicly announced on Friday.
