IRAN (Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - In a research project titled “Fasting in the Holy Month of Ramadan” conducted by the General Office of Education and Research affiliated to the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB), the physical and social benefits of fasting as well as the correct ways of practicing this religious observance have been investigated.
The significance of fasting as an imperative in all religious sects is highlighted in the introduction of the research, quoting Imam Ali (AS) as saying: “Fasting is an ancient ritual, no religious sect is exempt from.”
The first and foremost effect of fasting is reflected in the individuals themselves, as they must, for instance, refrain from verbal vices such as telling lies, backbiting, and accusatory remarks; otherwise, their fasting will degrade in or lose its entire value before God.
Constant challenging with immoral habits during one month will eventually help the individual get rid of them and improve his/her social relations as well.
Another equally important effect of fasting is reducing the rate of crimes to a considerable extent during the holy month, as the fasting individuals are not allowed to swear or quarrel with others.
Promoting the culture of abstinence and self-restraint as well as having frugal meals is another highly influential result that can bring about effective outcomes for the country’s economy, particularly if considered on a large scale.
Also, piety, an immediate influence of fasting, can help individuals get away from sensual pleasure and gain control over their temptation, so that they get much closer to the Creator.
Research has revealed a close relationship between fasting and tranquility. The more committed the individuals are, the less they suffer from mental disorders including depression which is a serious threat to both their personal and social life, and disappointing for their future plans.
A good measure of evaluation is the scientific and hygienic aspects of fasting that have been emphasized both in Islam and medical science. As Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) has stated, fasting guarantees health and a feeling of well-being, and according to medical findings, it can be regarded as a perfect diet as well as a natural treatment for many of diseases worryingly on the rise in today's world.
Fasting can also cure obesity through gradually reducing the amount of fat and harmful substances in body, and strengthen the immune system.
Conducted based on the holy Quran and Ahlul-Bayt’s (AS) sayings, the research has discovered the sociological benefits of fasting such as reducing the level of poverty and crime in society, improving the system of economy, developing social control and increasing the spirit of sympathy, compassion, and altruism.
It has also investigated some of the spiritual and mental outcomes of fasting including piety and peace of mind, as well as the strategies that can be used by the media to attract more people to this religious duty.
