(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Some 134 foreigners converted to Islam in Algeria in 2011, Algiers Religious Affairs Ministry sub-director for orientation Yahia Douri said Sunday.
The majority of people who converted to Islam in 2011 are Frenchmen settled in Algeria for work, Douri said in a statement to Algerian Press Service (APS), adding that the number of the Chinese is "progressing" these last years.
These figures are far from reflecting the reality as numerous who declare their conversion in the mosques are not making it official by documents.
The largest number of conversions to Islam was recorded in Algiers and Tizi-Ouzou, Douri noted.
Most of them are motivated by the willingness to deepen research in terms of religions.
In addition to marriage with Algerians which is the main reason of foreigners' conversion to Islam, they are attracted by Islamic social mutual help.
The number of persons converted to Islam progresses year after year moving from 44 persons in 2004 to 198 in 2010.
