(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - The Birth anniversary of Abul Fadhl Abbas was held at the Baqiyyatullah Husainiyyah on July 7, 2011. Scholars’ delivered lectures at the event attended by thousands of people from far and near. The Leader of the African Shia Islamic Movement in Nigeria, Sayyed Ibraheem Zakzaky delivered an inspiring speech on the life and sacrifice of Abbas, whom he described as role model for youths. Sheikh Zakzaky compared the focus and reasoning of a soldier in a modern day secular system and in an Islamic System. According to him, soldiers in the current system are trained to take orders of the Commander, right or wrong. They have no choice. He further explained that, the army in such a system is programmed not to apply reason and intellect, especially when it comes to military operations. “Their thinking faculty is manipulated, which does not allow them to think”, he said.He stated that, such action is the legacy of Mu’awaiyyah and Yazid. When the latter sent armies to Karbala. “They were not allowed to think or reason, even when Imam Husain (AS) was delivering a sermon describing his lofty status as the son of the daughter of the Prophet at Karbala”. Sayyed Zakzkay said, some of Yazid’s army wanted to resist the order, but were made to believe that they were commanded by Islam never oppose a Leader. In addition, he said, each of Yazid’s soldiers was after worldly gain, thinking of what to get from Yazid, depending on their role and number of heads they piled up at Karbala. “So, the sermon of Imam Husain meant nothing to them. They were scrambling as to who will take more heads, especially that of Imam Husain, to Yazid and receive the highest reward. Sheikh Zakzaky said, in Islam, a soldier must by nature of his work constantly apply reason and common sense in the discharging of his duty; it may lead to loss of lives. During the Islamic Revolution in Iran, Imam Khomein clearly understood this; he therefore instilled in them the concept of reason and intellect as a guide in every situation so that they did not senselessly kill people. In this way, he added, some of the armies threw away their guns and joined the revolution. “This is our aim; we will teach the army how to apply reason. In the past they tried to provoke brothers, but yet the brothers know well how to handle the situation. Testimony to this can be seen during the recent political crises, how members applied common sense and saved situation”. ABUL FADHL ABBASAbul Fadhl Abbas is a role model for youths, a brave Islamic soldier who fought in defense of Imam Husaini(AS). He was born 26 A.H. Imam Husain (AS) brought the news of his birth to Imam Ali (AS) where upon Imam Ali said, “You are happy with the birth of a baby who will stand by you as protector”. He was brave, devoted servant of Allah who was attached to Imam Husain at all difficult situation. Among his titles are- the flag bearer of Imam Husain (AS) at Karbala, the provider of the water to thirsty, the Qamr of Hashimites ( Moon Light of the Banu Hasheem), signifying his glowing handsomeness. His mother is Ummu Baneen, though her real name is Fatimah, she however chose not be called Fatimah in order not to cause sorrow to Al-Hasan and Al-Husain of their mother’s name. She was a loving and caring protector of Imam Husain (AS) as she always called him “my master”. When the news of the death of each of her four children, including Al-Abbas, in Karbala was narrated to her, in each case, she asked what of Imam Husain (AS), “My Master Husain”. Her love and concern for Imam Husain and that his safety was more dearer and comforting to her than that of her children. She was a special mother to Abbas.Al-Abbas is a brave warrior whose brevity has been noticed. Imam Ali had during the battles of Siffin, Nahrwan and Jamal sent him to the frontline ahead of Imam Hasan and Husain (AS). People asked the Imam why he sent Abbas instead of Hasan and Husai(AS). “Hasan and Husain are my eyes; Abbas is my hand, you protect your eyes with hands”, Imam Ali replied. HIS MARTYRDOMThe martyrdom of A-Abbas was the most sorrowful moment for Imam Husain (AS), just like the martyrdom of Jafar and Hamzah was most sorrowful to the Holy Prophet. Al Abbas reached Euphrates River at Karbala after crossing Yazids’ men and after gathering the water, Abbas rode back towards the camp. On his way back, he was struck from behind and one of his arms was amputated. Then, he was stuck from behind again, amputating his other arm. Abbas was now carrying the water-bag in his mouth. He was martyred at karbala in defense of imam Husain(AS). Al-Abbas is a role model for the all youths, and the path he treaded is the path of struggle for those who want to attain eternal bliss./129
