A powerful Bahraini opposition group said that settlement of the ongoing political crisis in the Persian Gulf island is possible only through government's respect for people's demand and establishment of democracy.

Addressing people in Setreh island, South of Manama, Leader of Bahrain's Shiite Al-Wefaq Association Ali Salman dismissed prerequisite-free talks with the Bahraini rulers.

As regards the group's preconditions for such talks, Sheikh Salman said, "The conditions for the talks will be met through halt in detentions, end to martial courts and violation of human rights, permission for peaceful demonstrations and respect for the right of freedom of expression and human rights."

"Otherwise, talks will be meaningless," the opposition figure reiterated.
