Iran: [P]GCC beating air over Bahrain

Iran's Interior Minister describes the [Persian] Gulf Cooperation Council's accusations that Tehran is meddling in the popular uprising in Bahrain as 'futile.

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Mostafa Mohammad-Najjar said the [P]CC's recent move in blaming Iran for interfering in Bahrain's internal affairs is “beating the air”.

“Such remarks are lies that they have said about Iran before and now that they have a lot of problems with their own people, they are projecting,” he added.

The Arab council's member states issued a statement at a ministerial meeting in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday, accusing Iran of interference in Bahrain's domestic affairs.

The Iranian interior minister pointed to the Islamic Republic's endeavors to safeguard regional peace and security over the past 30 years, stressing that “Iran has never interfered in any country's affairs.”

Iran has taken a stand against the massacre of Bahraini people at the hands of the Manama government, Mohammad-Najjar said.

Since mid-February, thousands of anti-government protesters in Bahrain have poured into the streets, calling for an end to the 40-year Al Khalifa rule.

On March 13, Saudi-led forces were dispatched to the Persian Gulf island at Manama's request to quell countrywide protests.

According to local sources, dozens of people have been killed and hundreds have been arrested so far during the crackdown on peaceful demonstrations.

Mohammad-Najjar criticized the [P]GCC for distorting the name of the “Persian Gulf” in their anti-Iran statement and said, “The Persian Gulf has always been and will always remain 'Persian' and proof of it has existed for thousands of years.”
