Iran students slam UN silence on Bahrain

Iranian students have waged a rally to protest the international community's silence on the Saudi-backed crackdown on peaceful demonstrations in Bahrain.

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - On Wednesday, students from universities across Tehran rallied in front of the United Nations office in the capital.

They chanted 'Down with Al Saud' and 'Down with Al Khalifa,' condemning the ruling families in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain for their 'crimes' against the Bahraini public.

The students also submitted a letter, addressed to the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, to the world body's Tehran office.

Anti-government protesters have been holding peaceful demonstrations across Bahrain since mid-February, calling for an end to the Al Khalifa dynasty's 40-year rule.

On March 13, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates deployed police and military forces to the Persian Gulf island at Manama's request to quell the countrywide protests.

According to local sources, scores of people have been killed and many others have gone missing since the beginning of the government-sanctioned crackdown.
