Bahrain not seeking political solution

A Bahraini activist says Manama refrains from seeking a political solution to the situation in the country amid anti-government protests in the small Persian Gulf monarchy.

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - "The regime is not seeking a political solution at the present time," Ali al-Faraj, the Bahraini political activist said.

He made the remarks after Bahrain's Ministry of Justice and Islamic Affairs announced that it would dissolve the country's two main opposition groups, the Islamic Action Association and the al-Wefaq.

Faraj noted that al-Wefaq had 18 seats in the 40-seat lower chamber of the country's parliament.

He also pointed out that the government has disregarded Bahrainis' demands for political reforms and continued its crackdown on people and the arrests and torture of the citizens.

"There is a humanitarian crisis in Bahrain. Everybody lives in fear, basically. Their houses are being raided any time especially in the middle of the night and people could be arrested at any time. The regime is not considering any political dialogue or a political solution," he said.

On Washington's stance on the developments in the state, the activist said the US has issued a very mild statement about the deaths of detainees who had 'obvious' signs of torture on their bodies while in police custody.

He added that the US is not exerting any pressure on the Bahraini government.
