(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Reports say the plane, which had been circling over the city for several minutes was suddenly spotted in flames on Saturday.
"Yes, it was one of the revolutionaries' planes. It was downed by the Gaddafi forces," a senior opposition leader said on Saturday.
"We have a few planes but they are old planes," the official added.
Several army units joined opposition forces after an uprising against Gaddafi began last month.
Reports coming out of Libya say pro-Gaddafi forces have intensified attacks on Benghazi and that dozens of people have been killed and others injured.
Other reports claim pro-Gaddafi troops have entered the city were met with resistance from the revolutionaries.
The strikes come despite an earlier claim of immediate ceasefire and a halt to military operations.
The UN Security Council authorized a no-fly zone over Libya on Thursday.
Reports widely indicate that the regime-led violence in the country has left thousands of protesters dead over the past several weeks.
