'540 students abducted in Libya'

Forces loyal to Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi have reportedly abducted 540 university students along with a number of other Libyan citizens.

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - The university students were kidnapped from their dormitories in the faculty of aerospace in Misrata, while a number of other Libyan citizens were kidnapped from the city of al-Zawiya, “informed sources” told Iran's Arabic-language news channel Al-Alam.

A number of anti-government protesters in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, have also been abducted by pro-Gaddafi forces.

The fate of the abducted people is unknown, and insecurity in the crisis-hit North African country has intensified concerns.

Thousands of people have been killed in the crackdown on protests by the Libyan regime in the past two weeks.

Anti-regime sentiment intensified on Monday after the Libyan government forces shot dead two anti-government protesters in Tripoli.

Fighting has also flared up in the cities of Misrata and al-Zawiya. At least two protesters have been killed in Misrata. Earlier, the protesters shot down a helicopter in the city.

Pro-Gaddafi forces have massed in the country's west, preparing to re-take the city of Nalut from the demonstrators.

Residents fear an attack by the government forces. The regime keeps suppression of the popular revolution as more cities in the west and east fall under the protesters' control.

The Al-Raqib Organization for Human Rights in Libya has condemned the atrocities and the violation of human rights by the Libyan regime, warning against the use of abducted people as human shield for Gaddafi in case of possible attacks against him.

The Libyan human rights organization urged the government of Libya and the country's security organizations to stop abducting the people.
