Libyan protestors control various areas in capital

Several areas of the Libyan capital, Tripoli, are now under the control of the demonstrators, while the Azizia Residence remains the only place in the nation’s capital considered absolutely safe for Libyan leader, Muammar Gaddafi.

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - In Tripoli on Friday, Gaddafi’s militias killed at least seven people, as demonstrators tried to stage a march after Friday’s prayers.

According to eyewitnesses, some of the assailants were using ambulances, to hide the origin of the gunfire ; they were also using anti-aircraft ammunitions from time to time.

Security forces had also set up checkpoints on the main avenues of Tripoli to prevent any gathering that could turn into a protest march.

Besides, General Abdelvettah Youness, the Interior minister who tendered his resignation three days ago, on Friday called on all young Libyans to help the people of Tripoli in their fight against the regime.

He explained to the Qatar-based Al Jazeera TV that “the revolutionary process was now irreversible.”

Likewise, General Abdessalam Mahmoud Hassibi, the Head of Libya’s Special Forces’ Operations, announced his defection to the militants of the 17 February revolution and urged his colleagues in the Army to join the protest movement.

For his part, Seif Al-Islam, Colonel Gaddafi’s son, on Friday indicated for the first time that his father’s regime was willing to discuss with the opposition.

He also declared that he was hoping for a ceasefire on Saturday, also admitting that the regime faced difficulties in two cities i.e. Messrata and Zaouiya, in addition to the chaos in the eastern regions of Libya.
