(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Libya's ambassador to India, who stepped down on Tuesday, called on the UN Security Council (UNSC) to take action against the brutal killing of civilians on the streets of the volatile country.
"I call on the five permanent members of the (United Nations) Security Council. Now is the time to be fair and honest to protect the Libyan people," Ali al-Essawi told Reuters in the Indian capital, New Delhi.
"The fall of (Libyan leader Muammar) Gaddafi is the imperative of the people in streets," he went on to say.
Essawi also expressed hope that more diplomats quit their jobs if the crackdown continued.
"We strongly condemn the barbaric, criminal massacre and the total elimination of our innocent civilians," the Libyan embassy in Malaysia said in a statement.
The embassy made the statement after nearly 200 pro-democracy protesters stormed into the place as a sign of resentment against the embattled President Muammer Gaddafi.
As the protests against Gaddafi's family are mounting, a widening gap between the Libyan president and several army officials and politicians has been reported.
The UNSC is set to hold a meeting on Tuesday to discuss the recent developments in the North African state.
The International Federation for Human Rights earlier said that as many as 400 pro-democracy protesters have been killed in the popular Libyan revolution against the country's 68-year leader.
Inspired by Egyptian revolution and similar uprisings in the Middle East and North African states, the Libyan nation took to the streets of Benghazi on February 15, demanding the ouster of Gaddafi.
