Egypt detains 4 former top officials

Egyptian authorities have arrested four former senior officials, including three ministers, on charges of misusing government funds.

(AhlulBayt News Agency) - Among those detained is the once widely-feared Interior Minister Habib el-Hadly whose agency was in charge of the country's police force. He was taken into custody on the suspicion of money-laundering.

Former Tourism Minister Zuheir Garana and former Housing Minister Ahmed al-Maghrabi have also been detained.

The Arab world's largest steel magnate and former parliament member Ahmed Ezz has also been arrested.

Ezz, who was also the secretary for organizational affairs of the National Democratic Party, has been charged with abusing his office for setting up two billet and steel factories.

All four men will be kept in detention for 15 days or longer, depending on a court ruling that is to be issued within the coming weeks.

Egypt's public prosecutor had previously issued a travel ban for each of the four officials and frozen all their assets.

Corruption was among the many grievances that Egyptian pro-democracy protesters revolted against during their 18 days of demonstrations earlier this month that eventually brought down Hosni Mubarak's authoritarian regime.

Egypt's public sector staff has continued nationwide strikes, protesting against low wages and adverse working conditions.

The army, which assumed power following the revolution, has ordered workers to stop their walkouts, saying the continuation of strikes will be disastrous.

The military rulers have given a panel of civilian experts ten days to amend five articles in the suspended constitution.

This is while the Egyptian people have repeatedly called on the army to hand over power to a civilian government.
