'Mubarak's ouster national demand'

A leader of Egypt's pro-democracy demonstrators has described the ouster of President Hosni Mubarak's regime as a national demand in the country.

(AhlulBayt News Agency) - “We are not talking about the demands of a particular group; this is the demand of the Egyptian people. They say that this regime must be ousted,” Ahmed Saleh told Press TV in an interview on Wednesday.

Saleh pointed out that after Mubarak's overthrow, there will be “a national unity government” that will serve as a transitional government for a limited period of time.

“A national assembly will be formed to create a new constitution that will put Egypt in its rightful place. We are hoping it will be a parliamentary republic and therefore we will have free and fair elections and real representation of people," he added.

The sixteenth day of protests in Egypt saw a bloody crackdown of demonstrators, as more than 100 protesters have been killed and wounded over the past two days.

On Wednesday, Kharga witnessed a brutal intervention by security forces who used live bullets to disperse protesters, killing at least five people and causing serious injuries to hundreds of others.

Cairo's Liberation Square, meanwhile, remained flooded with demonstrators who have vowed not to go home until Mubarak steps down.

Reports say Egyptian armed forces have stationed a large number of tanks and mechanized infantry vehicles in and around the flashpoint square.

The United Nations has estimated that at least 300 people have been killed in more than two weeks of demonstrations against Mubarak's three-decade grip on power.
