“Today, we are witnessing that there are developments in Tunisia and Egypt which are spread to other countries as well…Enemies regard Iran as a major factor behind causing the (ongoing) movements,” Fars news agency quoted Ayatollah Makarem as saying on Monday.
“This is the reason that enemies have mounted pressure on our country,” he added.
Egypt and Tunisia have been the scene of bloody demonstrations over the past month.
As the Egyptian revolution entered its 14th consecutive day on Monday, millions of people along with opposition groups continue their protests demanding for the immediate ouster of embattled President Hosni Mubarak.
Demonstrators are pouring into streets in the capital Cairo despite talks between the Egyptian government and opposition parties that produced no immediate breakthrough in the two-week-old standoff.
Since the start of the protests in troubled Egypt on January 25, which was inspired by Tunisia's revolution, more than 300 people have lost their lives and thousands more sustained injuries during anti-government demonstrations.
In Tunisia, at least 147 people were killed and 510 injured during the revolution that led to the overthrow of Tunisian President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali 23-year rule, according to the United Nations.
On January 14, President Ben Ali fled the North African country to the Saudi port city of Jeddah.
Ayatollah Makarem pointed to “all-out” efforts by enemies to inflict damage on the Islamic Revolution over the past 32 years and said, “Enemies expected that the Islamic Republic would collapse during these years but they reached to an understanding that the Islamic establishment has been stabilized.”
He emphasized that enemies' efforts were failed thanks to the vigilance of the Iranian nation.
The senior cleric stressed the importance of remaining vigilant as “enemies are constantly hatching plots.”
