Speaking to Today's Zaman on recent developments in Egypt, Ramadan said the consequences of pushing protestors back would be violence and bloodshed. “It is now too late to go back. If opposition groups take such a step backward and if [Egypt's President Hosni] Mubarak gets to keep his seat, the result would be disastrous,” he said.
In response to claims that Egypt would be taken over by radical Islamists following Mubarak's resignation, Ramadan said that such forecasts were deliberately manufactured and spread by the Mubarak administration. Dismissing this possibility, he said: “If you know the history of Egypt, or even just the history of the Muslim Brotherhood, you also know that these developments will not turn Egypt into a new Iran in the region. This is not an Iranian scenario.”
He also underlined that he had no links to the Muslim Brotherhood, which was founded by his grandfather, adding that the protests that have been going on for days were not organized by the group. He said that although the group's older members were closer to Wahhabi Islam, most of the younger orders are influenced by Turkey's Justice and Development Party (AK Party). He said: “This actually points to the generational divide in the Muslim Brotherhood. This divide sometimes causes tension and conflict.” Praising Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for calling on Mubarak to listen to the people of Egypt, he said people in the country attached special importance to this “courageous stand coming from the leader of a Muslim country.” Comparing Israel and Turkey's approaches to the upheaval in Egypt, Ramadan said, “If it is supporting a dictator now, nobody can claim after this point that Israel is the only democracy in the region.”
Ramadan also noted the possibility of an internal conflict among the opposition in the post-Mubarak era, which might give the Egyptian army some room for political maneuvering. He said there appeared to be no opposition to the leadership of Mohamed ElBaradei -- a veteran diplomat, Nobel Peace Prize laureate and leading opposition activist. He said he thought the opposition was currently trying to agree on a figure from civil society. “Currently, there is obviously no leader who is managing the entire process,” he said.
