Greek PM to take EU message to Egypt

Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou is expected to travel to Egypt in order to deliver a message from the European Union.

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou is expected to travel to Egypt in order to deliver a message from the European Union.

The visit is said to have been scheduled following discussions with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

"I have decided to go to Cairo, probably on Sunday, to carry there the EU's spirit and current debate as well as Greece's thoughts," Papandreou said in a news conference in Belgium's capital, Brussels, regarding Egypt's current situation.

“I want to carry a message to President Mubarak and have talks with him," Reuters quoted him as saying.

Papandreou also announced that EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton may also attend the talks in the Egyptian capital.

After offering the support of his country and the EU to the Egyptian people, the Greek premier added that situation in Egypt was being closely monitored by the international community.

Millions of Egyptians have taken to the streets over the past week and a half, demanding an immediate end to Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak's regime.

According to the United Nations, at least 300 people have been killed and thousands more injured during the revolution protests in the North African country.

Protesters have vowed to stand firm despite the deadly clashes over the past few days.
