(AhlulBayt News Agency) - The US “didn't raise the fact that he (Mubarak) has fabricated all these elections that happened under him. He won with 98 percent (of the vote) for example, most of his elections. So they didn't raise these issues,” the director of the Institute for Gulf Affairs (IGA), Ali al-Ahmed, said in an interview with Press TV on Sunday.
Al-Ahmed pointed out that Washington “raised the issue of Christian citizens of Egypt, the Copts, and the issues of human rights and women's rights, but it was not enough. They didn't support the rights of (the) Egyptian people to a representative government through a transparent election.”
He noted that during the administration of US President Barack Obama, Egyptian issues have been ignored to an even greater extent, saying that “… after Obama, even the limited issue of human rights was abandoned, and Obama took the money allocated to support the civic society and shifted it to other issues -- to unviable human rights areas. They didn't support the core human rights of Egyptians for a representative government, for fair and transparent elections.”
Egypt's armed forces have threatened to shoot on sight anyone, who refuses to obey the curfew imposed on major cities in the volatile country. The length of the curfew has been extended and is to be in place from 3 p.m. to 8 a.m. local time.
The Egyptian army was reportedly given the orders to open fire on the protesters in a bid to protect the Mubarak regime.
Military helicopters and US-made F-16 fighter jets made low passes on Sunday over Cairo's Tahrir Square, which is one of the epicenters of the uprising, as the number of protesters keeps rising.
US citizens and Italians are said to have gone to Cairo's airport, where they are waiting for a chance to get out, causing a great crush in the terminal.
Clashes between Egyptian protesters and police have so far left 150 people dead and thousands of others injured since the outbreak of the demonstrations on Tuesday.
