(AhlulBayt News Agency) - "The UK government ignores civil rights of students and reacts harshly to peaceful protests," a member of the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission of the Iranian Parliament (Majlis), Heshmatollah Falahatpisheh said on Tuesday.
The Iranian lawmaker added that response of the British police toward student protesters ran counter to human rights regulations.
He also criticized Britain's interference in internal affairs of other countries and said the crackdown on students took place while London meddles in domestic affairs of other countries in the name of human rights.
The UK claims to defend human rights while showing no tolerance for peaceful protest rallies and taking violent measures to suppress such objections, Falahatpisheh noted.
He emphasized that Britain's interference in Iran's internal affairs in the name of human rights is entirely unacceptable.
Meanwhile, Head of Iran-Britain Parliamentary Friendship Group Hossein Nejabat told IRNA on Tuesday that the UK police crackdown against the country's students revealed discord among British officials.
"Britain prepares spiteful reports on human rights conditions in other countries due to the influence it wields in international organizations," he said.
The Iranian lawmaker pointed out that British statesmen still refuse to accept realities in their own country and regard themselves as a "global superpower."
The remarks by the two Iranian lawmakers came after British Ambassador to Tehran Simon Gass, in a web posting on December 9, accused Iran of violating human rights regulations, demonstrating yet another case of London's double standards towards Iran.
Following the British diplomat's commentary, Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Commission passed a resolution on Sunday, after hours of deliberation, recommending severance of all ties with the United Kingdom.
Iran has considered breaking off relations with Britain several times due to London's persistence in following a meddlesome and undiplomatic approach towards Tehran.
Gass' brazen remarks came at a time when the British police were engaged in a brutal crackdown on peaceful student protests in the UK.
Many students that took part in protest rallies against sharp tuition fee hikes were severely assaulted and detained by British police.
