(AhlulBayt News Agency) - Sudan's president said the country would adopt an Islamic constitution if the south split away after a referendum due next month, in a speech on Sunday.
"After the secession of South Sudan, we'll change the constitution. There will be no question of cultural or ethnic diversity. Sharia will be the only source of the constitution, and Arabic the only official language," Bashir said on national television.
"Sharia (Islamic law) and Islam will be the main source for the constitution, Islam the official religion and Arabic the official language," he said.
Most southerners may vote for separation in the poll, scheduled to start on Jan. 9 and last for a week.
Northern and southern leaders are locked in negotiations over a number of issues, including the sharing out of oil revenues and the citizenship of their people after a separation.
