The accumulated zakat from its customers' savings was presented by the Minister of Development Pehin Orang Kaya Hamzah Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Abdullah Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Hj Bakar, in his capacity as the chairman of Taib Board of Directors, to Minister of Religious Affairs Pg Dato Seri Setia Dr Hj Mohammad Pg Hj Abdul Rahman, Muib president.
Muib which is under the Ministry of Religious Affairs has the authority over the collection and distribution of the zakat under the Islamic Religious Council Act and Kadi Courts Act Chapter 77, Section 114 to 121. The zakat payments collected will be distributed to those qualified to receive them, comprising fakir miskin (poor and needy), muallaf (converts), amil (those appointed to collect tithe payments), al gharimin (those in debt but not due to extravagance or illicit habits, and ibnu sabil or musafir (a wayfarer in need of money while travelling).
Last March, Taib handed over more than $1 million of accumulated zakat, from 1,714 accounts from July to December 2009.
Also present yesterday were Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs, Pg Hj Bahrom Pg Hj Bahar, Taib's Managing Director Mohd Yusof Hj Abd Rahman and Secretary of Muib, Hj Abdul Wahab Hj Sapar.
