Tanzania: Muslim Clerics Plead for Peaceful Polls

Dar es Salaam — MUSLIM clerics on Thursday added their voices to calls for peace and harmony on the polling day - on Sunday.

Dar es Salaam (AhlulBayt News Agency) - MUSLIM clerics on Thursday added their voices to calls for peace and harmony on the polling day - on Sunday.

The Organization of Muslim Scholars in Tanzania has joined other religious bodies to implore voters to pick good leaders.

Sheikh Suleiman Kilemile told a news conference at Kwa Mtoro mosque in the city on Thursday Muslim voters as a matter of religious duty have to vote for leaders who would maintain peace and solidarity among the people.

"Choosing good leaders will not only ensure maintenance of the country's good governance record, but contribute to sustainable development," he said.

The scholars who represented about 300 of their colleagues in the country expressed satisfaction on the trend of the campaigns and preparations for the polls.

Meanwhile, schedules for upcountry passenger buses might be affected by the voting exercise on Sunday, which will also involve drivers and conductors.

The Tanzania Drivers Association (TDA) apologised for possibility of delays. TDA Chairman Mr Mohamed Uliza said in a statement that all eligible members must go to polling centres early to avoid long delays.

"We call upon all drivers to fulfill this noble obligation and ask for them to remain calm throughout the whole exercise and avoid acts that might lead to the disruption of peace and security," he said.
