Eight international students receive awards at malaysian Islamic university

The 26th Convocation 2010 of the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) was held from the 2nd October 2010 (Saturday) until 4th October (Monday) at the Cultural Activity Centre (CAC), at the IIUM Gombak Campus near the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur.

KUALA LUMPUR (AhlulBayt News Agency) - The 26th Convocation 2010 of the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) was held from the 2nd October 2010 (Saturday) until 4th October (Monday) at the Cultural Activity Centre (CAC), at the IIUM Gombak Campus near the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur.

The Convocation witnessed 4,334 students -- 3,401 undergraduate and 933 postgraduate students -- from 100 countries throughout the world receiving their scrolls.

The convocation this year consisted of 1,593 male and 2,741 female graduates. A total of 3,699 graduates were from Malaysia, while 635 were international students.

When the International Islamic University Malaysia was established in 1983, it heralded the beginning of the spirit of Internationalism for the growth of intellectual knowledge and aspirations in Malaysia.

The IIUM presently supports a wide variety of undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes and offering courses, which develop the managerial mind to adapt to change, to be proactive and exploit opportunities.

Altogether, since 1987 until today, there have been 51,545 graduates and postgraduates who have successfully completed their studies in the IIUM. Out of this number, 45,567 were from Malaysia while 5,979 were international students.

BEST STUDENT (PhD) -- ALGERIA

Nadjet Aknouche-Best Student for Doctor of Philosophy (Psychology) Human Sciences IIUMNadjet Aknouche, 38, is from Algiers, Algeria, She did her bachelor in Algeria while both master and Ph.D in IIUM.

She decided to pursue her master and Ph. D here (IIUM) is because IIUM is a unique and the best university with its focus missions on: Integration, Islamization, and Internationalization, that makes IIUM different from other universities.

She is married with one son, aged nine years. Currently she is working as a lecturer in the Psychology Department, Kulliyyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Science at IIUM.

According to her, time management is the most important thing while studying. She always tries to analyze and criticize what she reads and never takes anything for granted. She appreciates IIUM very much.

In IIUM, she learns to be critical. IIUM is the place where people can achieve to be good Muslim in every aspect of life. IIUM has given her great chance to meet different people from all over the world.

BEST OVERALL STUDENT -- INDIA

During the convocation, Hashim Mazhar, 23, from New Delhi, India, received four university awards -- for the for Rectors’ Award (Excellent performance in Co-curricular Activities at National Level), Best Student (overall) for the university level, best Student (Overall) for Kulliyyah of engineering, and Best student in Robotics and Automation for undergraduate awards at University and Kulliyyah level.

Hashim is the only male in a family of five siblings together with other four sisters. He received his primary education at an International School in India. Currently, he is pursuing his masters’ degree in aerospace mechatronics at McGill University in Montreal, Canada.

Hashim spends at least three hours per day to study. He was a Chairman in Student Affairs, for Student Representative Council IIUM, an editor for a newsletter Qasas Assalam Islamic Awareness and a tutor in Engineering Kuliyyah. A former IIUM cricket player and won gold medal in Malaysian University Sports Council (MASUM) recently.

The best memory while studying in IIUM is the moment he received his scroll during his convocation after all the hard work.

BEST STUDENT (FINANCE) -- CHINA

During the convocation, Zhang Heng Chao Ali, 25, from Henan province, China, received the university award for Best Student in Finance for undergraduate awards at Kulliyyah level.

He received his early education at No.1 Xiang Cheng High School, China. He is now furthering his study in master’s degree in economics in IIUM. He plans to further his PhD in Canada in finance.

Among the awards, he received while studying here are, Best Students of Al Bukhary Foundation, Dean’s List Student for every semester, and received two times Excellent awards from IIUM.

For him, IIUM is not only a place to seek for knowledge, but to train him to be a real person to face the outside world. The most beautiful moment in IIUM for him is to know the true meaning of Islam.

Best Student MBA (Strategic Management) -- Jordan

Hala Mohammad Yousef Al- Atiyat, 38, from Jordan, received the university award for Best Student (academic) for Master of Business Administration in Strategic Management at Kulliyyah level.She has four sisters and two brothers and she is the second child. She plans to do her Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in United Kingdon (UK), while she has her first degree in Saudi Arabia majoring in Information System. Currently, she is working as a lecturer in Dar Hikmah in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. She loves cooking, watching documentaries, and socializing through online social networking.IIUM is like a second home for her, because she really enjoys studying here. She exposed to many cultures around the world in IIUM, especially the various cultures about Asia.

Best Student PhD (Education) -- Oman

During the convocation, Salim Hamed Sulaiman al Mahruqi, 38, from Oman, received the university awards for Best Student for Doctor of Philosophy in Education at Kulliyyah level.He obtained his first degree in Oman from Sultan Qaboos University in physical education, then finishing his masters’ degree also in IIUM in the Curriculum Instruction. Since he is married with four children therefore, he will focus his study during the night for two hours at least for almost every day. He loves readings, horse riding and photography. The best moment for him in IIUM is after he presented his research, paper entitled ‘Sports from Islamic Perspectives: Scopes and Objectives’.

Al-Azab-Book Prize Award for Bachelor of Information Technology IIUM -- Yemen

Fadwa Gamal Mohammed Al-Azab, 25, is from Sana’a, Yemen. She completed her first degree in Information Technology at International Islamic University Malaysia with CGPA 3.713. She has 4 siblings, one brother and three sisters, and she is the oldest in the family. Both of her parents are lecturers at Sana’a University. She plans to further her study to masters degree in Business Information Technology either in Malaysia or United Kingdom (UK).

Her method in studying is simple. She always tries to do assignment earlier and never postpone it. If she finds difficult to understand, she will ask her friends or search from the internet for further explanation.

Fadwa, who is receiving the book prize award for bachelor of Information Technology from IIUM, loves reading books on management, leadership, and motivation. Her hobbies are cooking and swimming.

Best student for Master of Science (IBF) -- UAE

During the convocation, Salim Ali Salim Ali Al Ali, 25, from UAE received the university award for best student for Master of Science in Islamic Banking & Finance for Kulliyyah level.He is also a degree holder in Syariah in Jurisprudence and it’s fundamental from University of Sharjah. He received a full sponsored from UAE to study in IIUM. He plans to further his PhD next year.His father is police officer while his mother is a housewife. He has nine siblings and he is number four. Currently he is working in Abu Dhabi as teaching assistance in UAE University since 2006.During his study in IIUM, He joined the IIBF club as a treasurer. He also presented a paper in International Conference for Management of Surplus Takaful Operation in Malaysia.

Best Student (Overall) for MBA -- Kenya

Omar Farzan Abdulrehman, 28, is from Mombasa, Kenya. She took her first degree in a college university in Malaysia and continued Master in Business Administration (MBA) in IIUM. She has six siblings, four sisters and two brothers. She was sponsored by a German lady. She received rector’s fellowship as well.She used to study in a group. She practiced to share her knowledge with friends since she was in primary school.Currently she is working in one of the private universities in Malaysia as a lecturer teaching financial management, and business statistics. Her hobbies are teaching, reading books and novels. During the IIUM Convocation, her uncle from Kenya, her sponsor from Germany, and her two cousins came to witness her receiving the award for Best Student (Overall) for MBA.
