Malaysian Higher Education Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin hosted a dinner Tuesday night for the delegates to the three-day conference which began earlier in the day. The delegates are discussing various issues related to higher education and scientific research in the Muslim world.
The conference was co-organized by Malaysia's Higher Education Ministry, Education Ministry and the Science Technology and Innovation Ministry in co-operation with the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO).
Earlier, Malaysian National University professor Dr Mohamed Amin Embi was named winner of the ISESCO Science and Technology Prize 2010. A professor of Technology in Enhanced Learning at the university's Faculty of Education, Dr Mohamed Amin received a gold medal, 5,000 USD and a certificate.
The prize was presented by Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin at the opening ceremony of 5th ICMHESR at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC).
Dr Mohamed Amin was the founder of numerous educational portals including a virtual teacher education centre.
In the Biology category, Dr Hossein Baharvand, 38, an associate professor and Head of Department of Stem Cells Biology and Developmental Biology at Iran's Royan Institute who had established the first mouse and human embryonic stem cells in Iran in 2003 won the prize.
For the category of Chemistry, Prof Dr Mirsaidov Ulmas, 65, from the Republic of Tajikistan won the award for becoming the first person in Tajikistan to begin Systematic Investigations of the Light Metals and Energetically Capacious Materials while another winner was Prof Dr Muhammad Qasim Jan, from Pakistan, who won the ISESCO Prize in Geology, while Dr Odibat Zaid from Jordan won in the Mathematics category.
